The special task force of the Nigerian Army, Operation Safe Haven, has convened a crucial meeting with key stakeholders from Bokkos and Mangu Local Government Areas of Plateau State.

According to a statement on Wednesday via the Nigerian Army’s X handle, the objective was to address the resurgence of criminal attacks that have plagued the areas, resulting in the loss of innocent lives.

The meeting, held at the headquarters of the 3 Division Nigerian Army on April 24, 2024, was chaired by the General Officer Commanding 3 Division Nigerian Army and Commander of Operation Safe Haven, Major General AE Abubakar.

Expressing his displeasure over the recurring breaches of security, Abubakar emphasised the need to adequately address the triggers of conflict in the region to prevent further breakdowns of law and order.

“The commander expressed displeasure over the reoccurring breach of security, which has resulted in the death of innocent civilians. The commander reiterated the triggers of conflict on the Plateau, which he emphasised must be adequately addressed to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

“He urged the stakeholders to support the resettlement efforts of government and security agencies, thereby allowing displaced persons to return back to their ancestral homes,” the statement noted.

He also disclosed that some perpetrators of the recent attacks have been apprehended, with weapons and motorcycles recovered, while operations continue to bring the remaining culprits to justice.

The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Muftwang, represented by the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ephraim Usman, acknowledged the erosion of trust among the people.

“He opined that the people have lost trust in each other, and the government must work to realign the people. The governor reiterated the government’s commitment to policing the state and making it safe for innocent citizens.

“The various stakeholders who spoke during the meeting emphasised the need for genuine dialogue and forgiveness between warring parties to forge ahead and allow the state to attain economic prosperity,” the statement added.

The meeting brought together top government officials, religious and traditional leaders, youth leaders, and socio-cultural groups.
