Mixed reactions as WAEC mulls CBT for WASSCE

The West African Examinations Council on Saturday said it was considering the introduction of Computer-Based Test in its examinations.

The Head of the National Office, Mr Patrick Areghan, who made this known during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, stated that the plan was at an advanced stage.

He said, “We have already started something in terms of CBT examination. We have gone far with our planning and all of that, even in the sub-region, the registrar to the council is also doing something. But this is not as easy as some people will think. This is because we ask ourselves, how do we conduct CBT for practicals and essay papers? We can only readily do that in the case of objective questions. But so many people will not see it from that angle. They argue that some others are doing it, so why can’t WAEC do the same?”

However, mixed reactions have continued to surround the plans of the examination body.

Some netizens commended WAEC for the development, while others stated that Nigeria did not have the infrastructure for such, adding that the CBT conducted by JAMB had its flaws.

Netizens, Charles Gregory and Kolawole Wahab described the policy as good and a welcome development.

Also, Awari Briggs said, “That’s good for us. This would encourage reading.”

Disagreeing with Briggs’s position on the matter, Adeoye Opeyemi said, “Reading indeed, it will encourage malpractice.”
