The delegation of the Federal Government led by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Monday, visited the family of Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of the Nigerian national flag, who died at the age of 84, at his family home at Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, after a brief illness.
The PUNCH had reported that Akinkunmi, who was a native of Ogun State, died in the early hours of Tuesday after a brief illness. One of his children announced this through his Facebook account.
It will also be recalled that he designed the flag while studying abroad prior to the independence in 1960.
The minister said the government was yet to find a replacement for what the late Akinkunmi did for Nigeria, adding, “We are here to console the family on behalf of Mr. President. Pa Akinkunmi’s role cannot be forgotten.
“The president, Bola Tinubu, received the news of the demise to the world beyond, and therefore, directed this FG delegation led by me to come to the family here in Ibadan and to tell them that the whole Nigerians share in their grief and also to tell them that Nigeria will forever be grateful for his contribution and national existence. Perhaps, when he was designing the national flag he did not know how powerful it would be as a symbol of peace and unity that all of us pray for in his country.
“It is a symbol that we are yet to find a replacement for. He designed it when he was in his 20s and he lived for more than 60 years after he designed it. Mr. President received the news of his death. We want to identify with the family and the people of Oyo State.
“We came to tell them that the Federal Government identify with them and the people of the state and to say that the Nigerian government will stand by them.” He stressed.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Remi Akinkunmi, thanked the delegation for their presence and promised to maintain the legacy left behind by their father.
