Police probe as gunmen kill two, abduct one in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has said it is investigating the gunmen attack on Wednesday in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State that killed two persons, identified as Suru Arije, 59, and Ilufoye Azeez, 30.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the gunmen also abducted a yet-to-be-identified woman during the incident that happened around 11am in the Alagemo community of Igbelaara, off Ijede road in Ikorodu.

According to police sources, four vigilantes were injured in the course of the attack.

A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity on Thursday told PUNCH Metro that she got to know about the incident when “In our community Whatsapp group, I discovered that people started asking if people at Igelaara were safe.”

“After asking around, we learnt that the gunmen attacked the area and killed two people and also kidnapped some persons.

“It happened at Alagemo which is part of Igbelaara, Ijede, in Ikorodu.”

In a video seen by our correspondent, a male voice is heard raising the alarm about the incident.

The yet-to-be-identified male disclosed that the incident had just happened.

“Kidnapping is happening right now in Igbe-Alagemo. What is all this? They have kidnapped two people. They are in the bush, they are the ones shooting,” the voice said.


In what indicated that the abducted victim was a female visitor in the area, the male adult was heard asking a motorcycle rider if she knew whom the victim could have come to visit in the area. The bikeman who confirmed that he brought the woman to the community said he knew who she visited.

Confirming the incident on Thursday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, told our correspondent that the incident took place around 11am in the area.

“It happened around 11am. Two persons died, four others were injured, and one woman was kidnapped,” the PPRO said in a telephone interview. He added that the injured persons were responding to treatment at the clinic.

Saying the police were on top of the matter, Hundeyin added, “We have commenced an investigation into the incident. We are on it.”

The incident was happening amid the recent kidnappings that are ravaging the country.

PUNCH Metro reports that troops of the Nigerian Army on Wednesday succeeded in rescuing 18 female kidnapped victims from and handed them over to the Katsina State Government.

It was coming days after 55 wedding guests who were said to be escorting a bride home along the Damari town in Sabuwa Local Government Area of the state were kidnapped by suspected bandits.

The Brigade Commander, 17 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Katsina, Brig.- Gen. Oluremi Fadairo, said that the soldiers took a rescue operation to the bandits’ enclaves at Yan-Tumaki and Dan-Ali forests.
