Strike: Kaduna records partial compliance
The nationwide indefinite strike embarked upon by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress recorded a partial compliance in Kaduna on Tuesday as many workers went about their normal duties.
Organised labour declared the nationwide strike following the alleged brutality of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, in Imo state a few days ago.
However, the headquarters of Kaduna Electric Distribution Company along Bank Road by Ahmadu Bello Way in the metropolis was shut to customers and workers as the officials of the National Union of Electricity Employees ensured that the main gate was firmly locked.
The North West Zonal Organising Secretary of the NUEE, Bukat Barde, while reacting, said the brutal attack on the NLC president was an assault on Nigerian workers which must not be allowed swept under the carpet.
“We must not allow the assault to be swept under the carpet. It is an assault on the entire workers.
“The strike will continue until the Federal Government yield to the demand of labour,” Barde said
Our correspondent who monitored the situation at Kaduna Electric observed that both staff and customers to the premises were prevented from gaining access to the company premises.
This was even as social and economic activities continued in the state capital.
The state secretariat along the ever-busy Independence Road was also opened to workers as they continued performing their official duties.
“We (workers) were not given any directives to embark on strike,” a worker who craves anonymity, said.
Also, banks as well as other financial institutions were opened to customers, while filing stations were seen dispensing fuel to customers.
When contacted, the NLC Chairman in the State, Comrade Ayuba Suleiman said, “There was no full compliance yet because notice of the strike action came to us late last night and there will be a need to hold a meeting and constitute a committee that will enforce compliance.
“The meeting is ongoing and full compliance will be enforced accordingly after the meeting.”
