Bandits kill Niger village head, abduct scores

Bandits have killed the village head of the Zagzaga community in the Kabula ward of the Munya Local Government Area of Niger State, Mallam Usman Hussaini.

The PUNCH learnt from a reliable source that the bandits stormed the residence of the village head, dragged him out and shot him dead.

The incident took place on Tuesday night immediately after the Muslims said their last prayers for the day. The bandits also abducted scores of villagers, mostly women and children.

In the stampede that followed the invasion by the bandits numbering over 50, many locals sustained injuries and are now receiving treatment either at the General Hospital in Sarkinpawa town, the headquarters of the local government or at the residences of traditionalists.

According to sources from the community, the whole town has now been deserted leaving the bandits, who have taken control of the area.

The overseeing Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency NSEMA, Salihu Garba, confirmed the incident saying, “We have received reports like that, we are waiting for our man on the ground to give us the details.”

He added, “After receiving the report from the field, a report will be sent to the state government.”

The Niger Police Command spokesman, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, did not respond to phone calls put across to him to confirm the incident.
