Nigeria Police Launch Investigation Over Viral Video Of Woman Reportedly Assaulted By Cops In Rivers State

The police in Rivers State, south-south Nigeria, say they have launched an investigation into a viral video showing a woman who was reportedly assaulted by policemen.

The attention of the Rivers State Police Command has been drawn to this trending video, and the Command wish to inform the General Public that all hands are on deck to identify the Police Officers in the trending video for proper investigation.
The video shows the woman’s mouth bleeding while a policeman who allegedly inflicted the injury is seen making a video of the environment. Others are seen searching her vehicle while some stood with some men who appeared to have stopped to intervene.
A woman, who identified herself as a sister of the victim, is heard in the video shouting and hurling abuses at the policemen who allegedly inflicted the injury on the woman.
In the 44-second video, the voice is heard saying, “Look at my sister’s mouth, Nigerian police, look at you, look at you. Look at the Nigerian police, useless set of men, bribery, and corruption.
“Idiot, you don’t have a job, jobless men, you will never see anything good in your life. When a policeman was persuading the sister to wash off the bloodstains on her clothes and face, she said, ‘Don’t wash the blood.’ What is your offence for them to inflict you with such wounds? See your mouth, see your windshield smashed. What is that offence you committed that would want such treatment?”
However, reacting to the viral video, the Rivers State Police Command said an investigation into the assault had commenced.
The command stated on its X (formerly Twitter) handle, “The attention of the Rivers State Police Command has been drawn to this trending video, and the Command wishes to inform the General Public that all hands are on deck to identify the Police Officers in the trending video for proper investigation.”
