Mali junta appoints new prime minister
Mali’s junta has appointed Abdoulaye Maiga, as the country’s new prime minister, just hours after dismissing his predecessor, Choguel Maiga, for criticising prolonged military rule.
The announcement was made on state television, ORTM, on Thursday, according to Reuters.
Choguel, a civilian leader and former head of the M5-RFP opposition coalition, had openly condemned the junta’s failure to hold elections within the promised 24-month transition period, following coups in 2020 and 2021.
He also expressed frustration over what he described as secretive decision-making by military leaders, including the indefinite postponement of elections initially planned for February this year.
“It’s all happening in total secrecy, without the prime minister’s knowledge,” Maiga told reporters recently, voicing his discontent with the lack of consultation within the government.
