Zamfara PDP Rep Gummi defects to APC
The member representing Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency of Zamfara State in the House of Representatives, Suleiman Abubakar Gummi, has dumped main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmaker cited unresolved internal and external crisis within his erstwhile party for his action.
His defection letter was read yesterday at plenary by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
Gummi said the unconstitutional removal of the chairman of the PDP in his local government was among his reasons for his defection to the APC.
The lawmaker noted that the chairman’s removal led to two persons claiming to be the lawful chairman of the party in the local government, making it difficult for the party to operate democratically.Related News
But rising under constitutional matters, Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda asked the Speaker to declare the seat vacant.
Chinda said the Supreme Court had clearly defined what a political crisis is, stressing that the reasons Gummi gave did not qualify as such.
The Minority Leader noted that the law of the land is clear about what should happen when a member leaves the party that sponsored him for the seat he occupies.
He said the whole world was watching the Speaker to do the right thing and in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and his oath of office.
