Cholera outbreak: Adamawa confirms 12 deaths
The Adamawa State government has finally broken its silence over the recent deadly cholera outbreak in the state, saying it has so far claimed over 12 lives, with 304 hospitalised.
Briefing journalists on Sunday in Yola after Arewa PUNCH had earlier reported one week ago that 10 patients died from the outbreak and 76 were on admission, the Commissioner of Health, Chief Felix Tangwami, clarified that the death toll now stands at 12.
Tangwami, after an emergency meeting with some international partners and other top health officials confirmed to journalists that the outbreak occurred in four local government areas of Girei, Furore, Yola-south and Yola-North.
“Out of the 12 deaths, six was in the hospital, and six was outside the hospital. So far, 304 people have been confirmed infected, and they are undergoing treatment at our facility,” he said.
The commissioner pointed out that since the outbreak occurred two weeks ago, 244 patients have been treated and discharged.
He further disclosed that one of the partners, the United Nations Children Funds, has donated 200,000 doses of cholera drugs to the state government.
“To avoid transmission of one person to another, two people visited the ward we admitted the cholera patients and the hospital management quarantine them to ensure that they were not infected after carring out tests on them before they were released,” he said.
Tangwami advised members of the public to observe public health rules and avoid drinking untreated water, stressing that the government has taken measures to curtail the spread of the cholera outbreak in the state.
