Group tackles APC over Rivers crisis
A pro-President Bola Tinubu and Governor Siminalayi Fubara group has faulted the Rivers State All Progressives Congress for the lingering political crisis in the state.
The group, Joint Accord for Tinubu and Fubara for 2027, also refuted claims by APC that the Rivers governor is solely responsible for the crisis rocking the state politically.
In a statement signed by its President, Dr Jackson Adebayo, the group stated that some members of the main opposition party must be held accountable for not respecting the agreement reached after Tinubu’s intervention.
The group alleged that some allies of a former Rivers governor were responsible for the unfolding crisis in the state by disregarding the Rivers Peace Accord that was signed at the behest of the President.
“It is regrettably lugubrious, to see democratic institutions supporting undemocratic behaviour exhibited by former local government chairmen who insisted on remaining in office after their tenure ended. Fubara acted responsibly by constituting Caretaker Committees until a fresh election is conducted.
“The APC and their allies lack the locus standi to criticise Fubara’s actions and should not blame him for the crisis in the state. It is important to note that the people of Rivers are his employers, and they are satisfied with his actions so far.
“As a party, the APC should not allow itself to be involved in the crisis by through its Caretaker Committee chairman, Tony Okocha. The party should maintain a neutral stance to continue enjoying the goodwill of the people of Rivers.”
The Rivers APC leadership had on Wednesday called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the state, saying there is a full-blown war there.
“Rivers State is at war. And the dramatis personae who are responsible for the mayhem that has claimed lives are known. The governor is helpless, and the police are helpless.
“Therefore the APC in Rivers State is calling for a state of emergency in Rivers State as a way of taming the mayhem, and the upsurge that is going on in the state. I call on the federal government to act fast in this regard,” the APC Caretaker Committee Chairman, Tony Okocha, made the call during a media briefing in Port Harcourt.
