Groundnut Sellers Receive AAUA Alumni Excellence Award
Two popular groundnut sellers, Mrs Nimota Yunusa (Iya Chemistry) and Mrs Mulika Mustapha (Iya Computer), are to receive honorary alumni membership from the Adekunle Ajasin University Alumni Association.
The decision to confer the award on the duo is in recognition of their contributions to the university community, particularly their emotional support and encouragement to students over the years.
According to the Alumni Association’s National Events and Publicity Officer, O’Seun Ogunsakin, “The award is a testament to the impact that Mrs Yunusa and Mrs Mustapha have had on the lives of students.”
The honorary alumni award will be presented to the duo during the Alumni Association’s 2024 National Convention, scheduled for December 20 and 21, 2024, in Akungba Akoko.
The convention will also feature a lecture titled “Revisiting University Sustainability: The Roles of the Alumni Association,” to be delivered by Prof. Benson Igboin, as well as the election of new leaders for the Alumni Association.
The National Events and Publicity Officer also disclosed that the association will redeem its prize for the university’s overall best graduating student for the 2023/2024 session.
He said the prize was instituted by the alumni body to encourage scholarship among students and promote healthy competition.
Ogunsakin noted that the Dr Olumide Olugbemi-Gabriel-led national executive committee was concerned that the monetary value of many of the prizes awarded to the best graduating students is not encouraging, hence students’ lacklustre attitude to academics. This, he said, prompted the Alumni Association to establish a ₦250,000 prize for the overall Best Graduating Student of the university.
He assured that the alumni body would continue to sustain the prize, as mechanisms have been put in place to ensure that the prize outlives successive administrations.
