Three PUNCH journalists shortlisted for 2024 Wole Soyinka award
Three journalists from The PUNCH have been named finalists for the 19th Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting.
Segun Odunayo, Olukayode Jaiyeola, and Elliot Ovadje are among 15 investigative reporters shortlisted across 11 media organisations for their impactful work.
The announcement, made on Friday by Motunrayo Alaka, Executive Director and CEO of the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism, follows the submission of 219 entries for this year’s edition.
Stella Din Jacob, Editor-in-Chief and News Director of TVC News, chairs the judging panel for the 2024 awards.
Winners will be unveiled at a presentation ceremony on Monday, December 9, 2024, at the AGIP Recital Hall, MUSON Centre, Lagos. The event will commence at 5 pm.
WAT, preceded by red carpet arrivals and refreshments from 4 pm.
Other finalists include Isaac Ojo of Splash 105.5FM, Umar Audu of Daily Nigerian, Victor Asowata of The Will, Olufunke Fayemi of Voice of Nigeria, Chukwuemeka Emenike of New Telegraph, and Aaron Atsahyel of Trust TV.
Also shortlisted are Jemilat Nasiru and Mansur Ibrahim of The Cable, Lami Sadiq of Daily Trust, Adedoja Salam-Adeniyi of TVC News, Ann Godwin of The Guardian, and Daniel Ojukwu from the Foundation for Investigative Journalism.
The event will cap the 2024 Amplify In-depth Media Conference and Awards. The two-day virtual conference, themed “Media Credibility, Investigative Reporting, and Artificial Intelligence,” will take place on December 8 and 9.
Tolu Ogunlesi, Managing Partner at Wowe Media and former Special Assistant on Digital/New Media to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, will deliver the keynote address.
Since its inception in 2005, the WSAIR has celebrated excellence in investigative journalism, aligning its activities with International Anti-Corruption Day and Human Rights Day to spotlight the relationship between investigative reporting, democracy, and civic engagement.
The 2024 edition is funded by the Netherlands Embassy under the Leveraging the Power of the Media to Fortify the Civic Space and Tackle Misinformation programme, in collaboration with the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development.
