Nigeria seeks global partners to advance space technology
The Federal Government has disclosed plans to enhance its space technology capabilities through international collaborations.
The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, made this known during a meeting with Axiom Space representatives at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States on Monday.
This was contained in a statement early Tuesday by the Director, Media and Corporate Communications of the National Space Research and Development Agency, Dr Felix Ale,
Nnaji emphasised the transformative power of space technologies.
“Space technologies have an impact on almost all aspects of development,” he stated.
He highlighted potential benefits for sectors including healthcare, agriculture, education, and weather forecasting, asserting that “the space economy has the potential to create wealth and drive national development.”
During the meeting, the minister expressed gratitude to the Axiom Space team and reiterated Nigeria’s openness to partnerships.
“We are open to collaboration and partnership in the drive towards the effective development of our space programme,” he said, underscoring the importance of the space sector to the current administration’s agenda.
The Special Adviser to the President on Technology and Digital Economy, Mr. Idris Saliu, praised Nnaji’s dedication.
“Your passion and determination towards consolidating the nation’s achievements in the critical sector of Space Science and Technology is commendable,” he noted, indicating that Axiom Space’s proposals would be seriously considered for future collaboration.
The Director General, National Space Research and Development Agency, Dr. Matthew Adepoju, thanked the minister for prioritising the meeting despite his busy schedule.
He affirmed that “the success of the Space Agency will no doubt help to better define and drive innovation and development in the country.”
Senior Director of International Government Business at Axiom Space, Mr. Garvey McIntosh described Nigeria’s potential to emerge as a leading space power in Africa.
“Nigeria is primed to leverage this relationship into a burgeoning space industry,” he stated, stressing the need for effective policy implementation and investment attraction.
In addition to discussions with Axiom Space, Nnaji also met with United Nations Special Advisor on Social and Economic Development, Brock Pierce, to explore further opportunities for enhancing Nigeria’s technological landscape.
He reiterated, “My decision to positively impact various parastatals under my ministry is not just a priority but a mission that must be accomplished.”
