State lawmakers seek improved security in South West
The lawmakers in the six states of the South-West, under the auspices of the South-West Legislative Reform Implementation Committee, have called for more support for the South West Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun Corps, to make the region safer.
The group also said there was a need for the stakeholders not to see the Amotekun Corps as a political tool in the hands of the politicians in the region.
This was contained in a communique of the SLRIC after its meeting held in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on Saturday. The communique was made available by the Majority Leader of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Mr Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, on Sunday.
According to the communique, the gathering brought together all majority leaders from across the region to discuss crucial issues impacting the region’s legislative, security, and economic landscape.
It read in part, ” The SLRIC meeting focused on several key areas, notably the harmonization of standing orders across the South-West region. This critical reform aims to streamline legislative procedures and ensure that all Houses of Assembly in the South-West are aligned, fostering seamless governance and legislative efficiency.
“One of the significant topics of discussion was the state of security in the region. We emphasized the urgent need to strengthen the security architecture across the South-West. Our discussions have led to the formulation of strategies to bolster our region’s security. Our collective responsibility is to ensure that these plans are swiftly and effectively implemented.”
The lawmakers also encouraged state governments in the region to create policies and partnerships that attract investments and drive economic growth.
“The future of the South-West is not just in security and governance, but in unlocking the vast economic potential of our region. Let us work towards creating an environment where businesses can thrive, providing jobs and prosperity for our people,” the group charged.
