The new chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Enugu State, Dr Martin Chukwunwike, has pledged to reclaim all seats lost by the party during the 2023 general elections.

The PDP suffered losses in the 2023 elections, including two senatorial seats (Enugu North and Enugu East), seven House of Representatives seats, and 14 House of Assembly seats to the Labour Party, despite winning the governorship seat narrowly.

Following his swearing-in, on Monday, Chukwunwike expressed regret that some party members defected in protest, contributing to the party’s poor performance in the state.

He said the objective of the new executive of the party was to bring back former members and prevent any further losses to opposition parties in future elections.

Dr Chukwunwike said the PDP’s resurgence in the southeast depended on the performance of its government in Enugu State.

He said, “In PDP, the party is supreme. In the PDP, the governor is the leader of the party. We have to look at what has happened in the country and the southeast geopolitical zone.

“Enugu State is the one man standing in the South-East. You may call that a success, but we will only count that we have succeeded in Enugu State by winning back all the lost seats in 2027.

“I believe we can achieve that because Enugu people have shown that we are beyond being bought over with money

“So, we should go back and get the seats we lost. PDP will be strong again because PDP is all about making the people happy.”

The chairman commended Governor Peter Mbah for helping the fortunes of the party in the state with his administration’s achievements just within one year in office.

“The governor is already showing the way. Within one year, he has done what others couldn’t do in four years.

“Our task now is to bring all those who have left back to the party, to have one big family once again,” he said.
