Ondo monarch advocates AI-driven security framework with traditional institutions
The Osemawe and Paramount Ruler of Ondo Kingdom, Oba Victor Kiladejo, has called on the management of the National Institute for Security Studies to develop a viable Artificial Intelligence template for more effective collaboration with traditional leaders in enhancing Nigeria’s security.
The Osemawe made this appeal on Monday at the NISS campus in Bwari, Abuja, where he delivered a lecture titled “Artificial Intelligence, Security, and Emerging Economies in Africa: Challenges and Prospects – The Traditional Institutions Perspective” to participants of the Executive Intelligence Management Course at the institute.
The prepared speech of the Ondo First-Class monarch was delivered by Professor Femi Mimiko, a renowned political scientist and former Vice-Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State.
Kiladejo emphasised the importance of integrating traditional rulers, who maintain close ties with the grassroots, into the national security framework through the use of AI and other modern techniques.
He stated, “It is evident that science, technology, and innovation—recognised as the foundation of human advancement—will continue to shape the future of human interaction. The more a nation invests in these areas, the faster it progresses on the path of development.”
The Osemawe underscored AI’s transformative potential, noting, “AI has emerged as the tool of the present and future, ensuring that machines become increasingly intelligent and applicable across all aspects of human life—from what we eat to how we fight wars.
“In the realm of security, just as AI offers opportunities for good, it also provides tools for those with criminal intentions.Related New
“This reality necessitates greater investment in science, technology, and innovation to ensure the state stays ahead of those who misuse intellect for nefarious purposes.”
He further highlighted the enduring role of traditional institutions in maintaining security within their domains, advocating for formal recognition of their contributions within the national security architecture.
“There is a pressing need to formalise the roles that traditional institutions have been playing, particularly in the area of security. Additionally, NISS should focus on advancing its AI and cyber capabilities to stay ahead of criminal elements,” the monarch asserted.
Oba Kiladejo pointed to global advancements in AI and robotics, citing examples from China and the United States, and urged NISS to be proactive in advising the Nigerian government on these evolving technologies.
“It is crucial for an agency like NISS to lead in advising the Nigerian government on how to adapt to these technological shifts,” he said.
He concluded by stressing the importance of fostering interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) among Nigerian youth, while also valuing the humanities, to secure a significant role for Nigeria in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
“This will ensure that as a country — and indeed a continent — we can secure a credible space in the evolving global landscape,” the Osemawe said.
