PSG sign Joao Neves in €70m deal from Benfica
Paris Saint-Germain, on Monday, won the race to sign Portuguese superstar Joao Neves in a €70 million transfer from Benfica.
The Ligue 1 champions have secured the highly sought-after 19-year-old midfielder on a five-year contract, keeping him at the club until 2029.
Joao Neves, who enjoyed a stellar 2023-24 season with Benfica, had attracted interest from several top clubs, including Manchester United. The Red Devils had reportedly seen bids rejected for the Portugal international before PSG swooped in to complete the deal.
As part of the transfer, Portuguese midfielder Renato Sanches will move to Benfica on loan with an option to buy, adding an intriguing dimension to the negotiations.
Upon signing for PSG, Neves expressed his excitement about joining the French giants.
“I’m very proud to be joining Paris Saint-Germain, a very ambitious Club. I’m going to give my all to help my team-mates, to grow at this fantastic Club and to win numerous titles,” he said.
The defensive midfielder, who has already earned nine caps for Portugal’s national team, is widely regarded as one of Europe’s brightest young talents.
His acquisition represents a significant coup for PSG as they continue to bolster their squad following the exit of Kylian Mbappe.
Fans may not have to wait long to see Neves in action, as he could potentially make his debut for PSG in their Ligue 1 season opener against Le Havre on August 16.
The arrival of Neves at PSG has raised questions about the future of fellow midfielder Manuel Ugarte, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer. It remains to be seen how Neves’ signing will impact Ugarte’s position within the squad.
