Three ICRC personnel, soldier killed in Niger Republic
The Islamic State of the West African Province fighters have killed three humanitarian workers and one soldier in Niger Republic.
The four victims met their end on May 28, 2024, in Chettimari in the Diffa Province of Niger Republic, according to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in the Lake Chad region.
Makama said the three humanitarian workers until their death worked with the International Committee for Red Cross in Niger Republic.
The expert, in a post on his X handle on Friday, said, “The terrorists ambushed a vehicle conveying the ICRC personnel in Chettimari in Diffa Province of the Republic of Niger on May 28, 2024.
“Sources informed Zagazola Makama that the terrorists also killed one Nigerien soldier and carted away the vehicle belonging to the ICRC officials.”
Meanwhile, ISWAP fighters on Wednesday killed two soldiers and a civilian in the restive region of Tillaberi, the defence ministry said.
The attack was carried out by “terrorists on some 20 motorcycles” in the Tabala village, some 100 kilometres (60 miles) east of the capital Niamey.
Three attackers were also left dead in the clash on Wednesday and authorities were searching for the rest, the statement said.
The region has been plagued for years by rebels linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group.
Tillaberi is in the vast “three borders” region between Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso.
Niger is ruled by military leaders who seized power in a July coup, citing a worsening security situation as justification for the power grab.
