AAUASU Election: Two kicked out of the race as SUEC releases names of qualified candidates
As the AAUA Students’ Union election scheduled to hold on March 21, 2024 inches closer, the Students’ Union Electoral Committee (SUEC) has, after a rigorous and holistic screening process, released the list of aspirants who are qualified to go to the polls.
The result which was released on Friday and signed by the SUEC Chairman, Professor Olukayode Afolabi, pronounced two of the aspirants disqualified on account that they did not measure up to the minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) required for elective offices as provided for in the AAUASU Constitution.
The two aspirants disqualified are Asagunla Blessing Olayinka (Gbotemie) from the Department of Public Administration, vying for the office of the Vice President, and Ibrahim AbdulBasit Opeyemi (Yembex) from the Department of Adult Education vying for the office of the Social Director.
The two disqualified aspirants had a CGPA below the 2.50 minimum CGPA required to contest for any office in the AAUASU. While Asagunla Blessing Olayinka (Gbotemie) had a CGPA of 2.11, Ibrahim AbdulBasit Opeyemi (Yembex) had a CGPA of 2.41.
In another development, though the thoughts that any of the presidential candidates would be weeded from the race– following the barrage of petitions written by some students– have been gaining grounds, the SUEC however took the student populace by surprise as none of the aspirants was disqualified.
Citizen Rapporteur reported on Wednesday that SUEC was inundated with petitions aiming to disqualify the two presidential aspirants.
