Insecurity: Senate, security chiefs meet again Tuesday
The Senate will be meeting with the nation’s security chiefs again next Tuesday.
The Senate had scheduled a meeting with the security chiefs for today (Wednesday) and after meeting with some of them decided to have another rescheduled meeting for Tuesday, February 13.
According to the Senate, its decision to have the Tuesday meeting was due to the absence of some of the heads of security agencies at the Wednesday meeting.
The security chiefs present were the Chiefs of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja; Naval Staff, Emmanuel Ogalla; Air Staff, Hassan Abubakar.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director-General, Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi, were also present.
The security chiefs arrived at the National Assembly on Wednesday in response to a Senate resolution for an interaction.
The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who was not available, however, sent a message to the Red Chamber that he was busy attending bilateral security meetings with the United Kingdom Security chiefs.
The Senate had, by its resolution last Tuesday, summoned the Service Chiefs to appear before it in plenary for required explanations on the worsening security situation in the country, just as its Committee on Banking, summoned the CBN Governor to appear before it today (Tuesday) on the state of the nation’s economy and free flow of the Naira.
While receiving the head of the Security agencies the Senate President, GodsWill Akpabio said, “While we welcome you, we are not passing the buck, we are not blaming you, but you are not complete.
“We also like to have the national security adviser, chief of defense staff, and director-general of the National Intelligence Agency, and the minister of interior.
“We want you to know that we represent the Nigerian people and we will only do well. The Senate is of the view that the FCT is under threat.”
Thereafter, Akpabio directed the clerk of the senate to inform other heads of security agencies to be present next week.
