AFCON: Nigeria behind you, Obi tells Super Eagles
The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has sent his best wishes to the Super Eagles ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations opener against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday (today).
Obi in a statement posted on Sunday on X wrote, “As our dear nation, Nigeria prepares for their first match against Equatorial Guinea in the Group A match at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations in Abidjan today, I wish to join other football enthusiasts in wishing our Super Eagles resounding victory in all their games,”
The former Anambra State governor hailed the impact of Nigerian football on the continent and globally. “Nigeria’s impact on football in Africa and globally is remarkable, thanks to the creative talent of our youths,” he remarked.
Obi expressed confidence in the Eagles’ chances in the tournament. “Our national football team is prepared and ready to bring home the trophy,” he said.
He encouraged the players to give their best. “I encourage them to give their best to the game and be of good cheer. Nigerians are solidly behind them,” Obi added.
He also congratulated the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) “for the tournament that helps to develop African youths and create unity in the continent.”
Nigeria is tipped to top Group A and make a deep run in the tournament. Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea Bissau will challenge to qualify in the group.
The Super Eagles today kick off their 2023 AFCON campaign in a match against Equatorial Guinea.
