Strike: Ondo records partial compliance
As the nationwide strike embarked upon by the organised labour union in the country began on Tuesday, the level of compliance in the public offices in Ondo State was not total.
When our correspondent moved round Akure, the state capital, it was observed that the offices in the state government secretariat and government agencies were under lock and key but some workers still went to the offices to perform their duties.
At the Adeyemi University of Education, Ondo, it was gathered that members of the organised labour of the institution stormed the campus and drove out the workers of the university who did not comply with the directive of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress.
Also, some commercial banks in the state capital did not totally comply as they operated skeletally, attending to few customers in some branches.
Similarly, teachers in some public schools in the state were also in the class teaching their pupils .
In a statement issued by the state NLC Chairman, Victor Amoko, the TUC Chairman, Comrade Clement Fatuase and the Joint Negotiating Council Chairman, Ademola Olapade, workers in the state are advised to comply with the strike directive appropriately.
The labour leadership said, “The strike is basically on issues that affect the attack on the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, and non-implementation of some agreement reached with the Federal Government aftermath of fuel subsidy removal.”
The Ondo organised labour, however, noted that the strike was not against the state government, but to protest against impunity in the country. The leadership call on all affiliate executives to ensure strict compliance with the directive of the national body until the matter is resolved.
Meanwhile, the state government has commended the teachers of some public schools that did not comply with the NLC’s directive.
The Executive Chairman, Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board, Victor Olabimtan, gave the commendation after getting reports from across the state, enjoining the teachers to continue to do their jobs to the best of their abilities as the government will always prioritize their welfare.
“Apart from prompt payment of salaries and allowances, the government will continue to look for creative ways to continue to encourage teachers in order to improve their job delivery and pupils’ performance for the overall development of the state,” Olabimtan stated.
He called on parents to allow their wards to go to school and learn.
