Boniface breaks Bundesliga record, says he ‘should have scored more’
Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has responded to breaking a 29-year-old record in the German Bundesliga for the most shots on goal after five rounds of games.
The previous record, held by Uwe Wegmann, stood at 25 shots on goal for Bochum during the 1994/1995 season.
Boniface achieved this feat on Sunday when Bayer Leverkusen defeated newly promoted Heidenheim 4-1 at the BayArena. The former Royale Union Saint-Gilloise striker also contributed to two of the goals scored by Bayer Leverkusen, making it an impressive day for him.
However, in his post-match comments, Boniface expressed his dissatisfaction with breaking the long-standing record, believing he could have performed even better. He was quoted as saying, “If you have 38 shots on goal as a player, you should have scored at least 25 goals. So I don’t want to congratulate myself on that.”
Notably, Boniface has only failed to make a goal contribution for Bayer Leverkusen on one occasion this season, which occurred during their 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich on matchday 4 of the Bundesliga. So far, he has netted a total of 8 goals across all competitions for the Black and Reds in this campaign.
