Lagos Assembly Invites Oworonshoki Residents To Meeting Over Demolition Of Houses By Sanwo-Olu’s Administration
According to the group, the new meeting between the lawmakers and the residents is slated for Tuesday, September 5, 2023.
The Lagos State House of Assembly has again invited the residents of Oworonshoki in the Kosofe local government area of the state over the continued demolition of their houses, without providing them with alternative shelters.
This was made known by a human rights and pro-democracy group, Take-It-Back Movement (TIB) in a post on X, formerly Twitter on Sunday while sharing a copy of the invitation letter.
According to the group, the new meeting between the lawmakers and the residents is slated for Tuesday, September 5, 2023.
The group wrote: “Again, Lagos State House Of Assembly invites representatives of the Oworonshoki community for a meeting scheduled to hold on Tuesday September 5, 2023.
“Even as we will be following up with this meeting, we want to say for the avoidance of doubt that we hold the Lagos state government responsible for this utter cruelty and lawlessness, and insist on immediate compensation of all victims of this demolition.”
The letter of invitation reads: “Sequel to the last meeting held on Tuesday, 22nd August, 2023 on the above subject, I am directed to re-invite you to a meeting with the 5-Man Ad-hoc Committee on Tuesday, 5th September, 2023 at the Conference Room, 20 Floor, Chamber’s WingAssembly Complex, Alausa, Ikeja by 10.00 a.m.
“You are kindly reminded to come along with all the documents requested at the meeting to enable the Committee to resolve the matter.”
Residents of the community on Saturday held a protest to register their grievances and plight over Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration’s continued demolition of their houses, without providing them with alternative shelters.
The residents, according to videos seen by SaharaReporters, displayed various placards as they marched along the streets with the cards bearing various inscriptions including “Let us breathe, stop the demolition,” “Our future is being truncated, stop the demolition,” “No to Land grabbing” and “Don’t get elected to get us evicted.”
SaharaReporters had reported how residents of Oworonshoki and Idi Araba communities were thrown into lamentation in July as Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration embarked on the demolition.
The state government through the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources had issued the affected residents only one week’s notice to vacate their homes, a notice that elapsed on July 27, 2023.
TIB earlier asked the state government to take responsibility for the demolition of homes and displacement of poor families in Oworonshoki.
