Nigerian leaders have queries before God, says Hamzat
Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, has advised youths to participate in the elections
He said failure to vote would be detrimental to good governance.
The deputy governor noted that Nigeria needs good leaders to develop.
He spoke at the closing of the 113th Islamic Vacation Course (IVC), organised by Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos State Area Unit, in Epe.
According to him, many leaders have questions to answer before God on their performance.
He said: “The future belongs to youths. Whether we like it or not, our generation will leave soon. So, it is their country, they must participate in elections, that is why they should ask the right questions because 2023 is about capability and ability to achieve their goals and who are the people that can do it for them based on proven records.”
Speaking on the training, Hamzat hailed the leadership of MSSN in Lagos for gathering youths in and outside the state for a rightful and impactful cause
He promised to support the organisation in its upcoming camp in 2023.
Amir (President) of MSSN in Lagos, Miftahudeen Thanni, urged stakeholders to tackle prevalent challenges so equal rights and peaceful coexistence could prevail in the society.
Thanni said Nigerians’ patriotism has been weakened by challenges confronting the nation.
He noted that “Islam and Humanity” was chosen as the theme of the weeklong camping programme to reflect on how Islam and Muslims could be saviours for the problems facing humanity.
“From abduction to corruption, to political assassination, to kidnapping, to religious bigotry and more disturbing challenges weakening our patriotism, the time cannot be riper to discuss this theme – Islam and Humanity.
“We urge all that are concerned to stand up to these challenges to give us a society where equal rights and peaceful coexistence prevail,” he said.
The organisers hailed Lagos State for issuing a circular to cement implementation of the Supreme Court judgment permitting use of hijab for Muslim female students in Lagos schools, saying “the act deepens constitutionalism”.
With a few months to the election, Thanni urged students and youths to imbibe the teachings of Islam as they carry out their duties.
He said only Allah knows the next set of leaders.
“We should not be involved in violence, ballot-snatching, vote-buying, and other vices. Allah is the best decider of our affairs and he knows what is unknown to mankind,” he noted.
