BREAKING: Atiku emerges PDP presidential candidate
Mr Abubakar polled a total of 371 votes while his closest rival, Governor of River State, Nyesom Wike, scored 237 votes.
Nigeria’s former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has again emerged the presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Mr Abubakar defeated 12 other candidates in a keenly contested presidential primary election held at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Saturday.
Of the over 700 votes casted during the election, he polled a total of 371 votes while his closest rival, Governor of River State, Nyesom Wike, scored 237 votes.
Nigeria’s former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, scored 70 votes to come third while the Governor of Bauchi, Bala Muhammed came fourth with 20 votes.
While Mr Atiku’s victory at the Abuja stadium velodrome was his second successful attempt, it would mark his sixth shot at the presidential seat. He has had at least other unsuccessful contests for the seat under both the APC and his current party, PDP.
He failed in his quest in 1993, 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2019.At the last election in 2019, the Adamawa-born politician, who contested on the PDP platform, lost to the incumbent, President Muhammadu Buhari.
In his 2011 bid, also under PDP, he garnered only 805 behind Musa Yar’Adua who scored 2736 votes and hoisted the PDP flag for the year.
Mr Abubakar suffered a similar defeat in 2014 under APC after dumping the PDP. He scored 954 to come third behind party’s flagbearer, Mr Buhari and Musa Kwankwaso, who came second.
As the winner of the race, the former Vice-president will again face whoever emerges from the forthcoming presidential primaries of ruling APC.
