The Nigerian Society of Engineers, on Thursday, commended President Bola Tinubu for the successful revitalisation of the Port Harcourt Refinery.

In a statement issued in Lagos, NSE President, Mrs Margaret Aina Oguntala, described the revitalisation of the refinery as a pivotal step towards enhancing Nigeria’s energy security and economic growth.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd. announced on Wednesday the resumption of operations at the Port Harcourt Refinery following comprehensive rehabilitation.

With an initial processing capacity of 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day, the project is expected to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products and strengthen local refining capabilities.

Oguntala, also an engineer, praised the Federal Government’s commitment to rejuvenating critical infrastructure.

She said: “The reopening of the Port Harcourt Refinery underscores the government’s dedication to achieving self-sufficiency in petroleum refining and enhancing Nigeria’s energy independence.”

The NSE President also emphasised the vital role Nigerian engineers played in the success of the project.

According to Oguntala, the achievement highlights the exceptional expertise and dedication of Nigerian engineers, demonstrating their capacity to deliver large-scale, impactful projects. She added that this milestone serves as an inspiration to the wider engineering community.

Oguntala expressed confidence that the refinery’s rehabilitation would stimulate further growth in Nigeria’s industrial sector by creating job opportunities, promoting economic diversification, and enhancing local capacity.

She reaffirmed the NSE’s commitment to advancing engineering excellence and supporting initiatives that harness Nigerian talent for sustainable national development.

“This significant achievement exemplifies the power of collaboration among government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and professional bodies in driving the nation’s development forward,” she said.
