Renowned Microbiologist, Prof. Ajayi, to Deliver 28th Inaugural Lecture at AAUA, September 24

Professor of Microbiology, Adedayo Olajide Ajayi, will deliver the 28th Inaugural Lecture of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), on Tuesday, September 24, 2024.

The lecture, titled “Microbiomes and Genomics: Battle against Antibiotic-Resistant Battalions within Biospheric Reservoirs,” will take place at the University Multipurpose Hall.

According to a statement from the office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) and Chairman of the Ceremonies Committee, Prof. Adebisi Daramola, the event will be chaired by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, and will begin at 2:00 PM, with guests and attendees expected to be seated by 1:30 PM.

Prof. Ajayi, the inaugural lecturer, holds a first degree in Environmental Health and a Master’s degree in Microbiology from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, and earned a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Ibadan.

A recipient of the prestigious Bill and Melinda Gates Grant, Prof. Ajayi began his academic career at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, in 2001 as an Assistant Lecturer and rose to the rank of professor in 2016.

Throughout his career, Prof. Ajayi has held various key administrative and academic roles, including Head of the Department of Microbiology, Director of the Centre for Infectious Disease Control and Drug Development, Chairman of the Laboratory Committee, Member of the AAUA Humboldt-Kolleg, and Editor of Science Research Annals.

An internationally recognized scholar, Prof. Ajayi is a highly sought-after speaker and moderator at both national and international conferences. He has authored and co-authored more than 87 research papers and books, which have been well-received in prestigious journals globally.

His numerous accolades include the Bill and Melinda Gates Grant and a ₦2 million TETFund research fellowship for producing bioactive compounds from Afromomum melegueta. He has also secured a postdoctoral grant for the Surveillance of Antibiotic Resistance Reservoirs in South Africa, and multiple other grants, including one from Adekunle Ajasin University.

Prof. Ajayi’s work has earned him recognition at the Infection Societies Conference in Manchester, United Kingdom, where he presented a paper on Antibiotic Sensitivity Test of Microorganisms from Water Sources in Akungba Akoko. Additionally, he won the Best Poster Prize Award at the EuroSciCon Conference for his contributions as co-chair in sessions on Medical Microbiology, Environmental Pathogenesis, and Microbial Infections.

Prof. Ajayi is married and blessed with children.
