Kano to uplift human rights activities

The Kano State Government has said that it will continue to provide all necessary support towards the uplift of human rights activities in the state.

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Dederi, who represented the state governor, Abba Yusuf, made this known on Monday, at the opening ceremony of the Forth Cycle of the United Nations UPR Engagement with stakeholders, which was organised by the Inter-Ministerial Committee in Kano.

Dederi said Kano, being a state that respects human rights, would continue to remain resolute in facilitating the support for any move that would enhance the reforms and implementation of human rights activities.

The commissioner appreciated the organisers of the UPR stakeholders engagement workshop for selecting the state as the host of the event.

To the participants that came from across states of the federation, he urged them to utilise what they will learn from the workshop so that it will be of benefit not only to their states but to the country at large.

Earlier, the representative of the Solicitor General of the Federation, Princess Chikwuani, said the objective of the United Nations Universal Periodic Review is to review the fulfilment of the human rights and commitments and obligations of all UN member states as contained in the UN Charter.

Chikwuani added that the aim of the stakeholders engagement was to collect and collate information on the human rights situation in Nigeria for the Forth Cycle Review.
